HN: Rath's scandal exposes power of regional party heads | Prague …

May 19th, 2012

Prague, May 17 (CTK) – The scandal of Czech Social Democrat (CSSD) David Rath, who resigned as central Bohemian regional governor over bribery charges on Wednesday, has revealed the power of regional party bosses, Jindrich Sidlo writes in Hospodarske noviny (HN) yesterday.

The police caught Rath, a deputy of the CSSD and former health minister, red-handed with 7 million crowns on him on Monday.

He was taken into custody and charges of harming EU financial interests, bribery and giving advantages when concluding public orders have been levelled against him.

The power makes the regional bosses so arrogant that they eventually ruin not only themselves, but also the parties that are unable to prevent this, Sidlo writes.

The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and the CSSD have alternately held power after two election terms for 20 years. Since the establishment of regions in 2000, the public knows that it has always been the opposition that scored a landslide victory in the middle of the government’s term of office when the regional elections are held, he adds.

As a result, the regional governors and regional party bosses have been indispensable partners and a force party leaders have had to reckon with willy-nilly for a long time, Sidlo writes.

In fact, they give the parties in question power and everything that is connected with it, especially if the parties are “cut off” from central resources at the moment, he adds.

Besides, since Czech parties do not have many members, it is not difficult to gain influence by means of a cunning recruitment policy. The new members may be all but illiterate, but this does not matter. At any rate, Prague must take them into account, Sidlo writes.

This is what Mirek Topolanek, former Czech prime minister in 2006-2009 and ODS leader, learned, he adds.

During the four years in which he waited for his chance in opposition, the ODS was transformed into a loose confederation of 14 regional organisations with which all sorts of “pragmatic” deals had to be concluded before every party congress, Sidlo writes.

The deals were then wildly celebrated by the “regional personalities” in the congress nightclubs, he adds.

Prime Minister and current ODS leader Petr Necas knows this, too. He recently openly admitted in an interview with HN that due to the balance of forces, he is sometimes forced to conclude purely expedient alliances with the people with whom who normally would not like to have anything in common, Sidlo writes.

If it were not so, Martin Kuba, a friend of the “successful businessman” Pavel Dlouhy from south Bohemia, would never have become industry and trade minister, he adds.

Now this was fully driven home to Social Democrat leader Bohuslav Sobotka, too.

In other words, if he was forced, as some people close to him say, to tolerate Jaroslav Palas (CSSD), Silesia-Moravia regional governor, for years, although Palas has never explained the origin of the millions of crowns for his family’s luxurious boarding house, it was only a matter of time before a similar bomb explodes under his hands, Sidlo writes.

It is difficult to estimate the number of such bombs in the Czech political landscape. However, it is certain that it is an extremely dangerous terrain. It is common knowledge that in such cases it takes years to clear the land, he adds.

Maxims of Christ's Servant Standing Before the Political Parties of …

May 16th, 2012

I am a Christian. I am the servant of Christ and His representative. All loyalty, fealty, and duty is owed to Him above all other relationships and associations. This means that my political loyalty and allegiance is to the Lord Jesus Christ when I walk into the ballot box, when I evaluate the action of political leaders, or when I exercise my God-given duty as an American to hold such leaders accountable for their actions. My principles and my practice are bound by an objective and transcendent standard established by my Master, not by the political objectives of a party.

Though political parties may be useful vehicles for advancing the Crown rights of Christ, they are only vehicles. They are never an end. At the moment that any political party or any representative of a party ceases to honor the Lord Jesus Christ through practice or principle, I must stand in firm and unequivocal opposition to such a party or person, at least in so far as their behavior is offensive to God.

As a Christian, I must refuse to apply a hypocritical standard of judgment against the leaders of one party, while refusing to hold another party accountable to the same standard. This means I am never at liberty to minimize or cover the sins of my own partisan friends who profess the One True Faith in order to gain a political advantage. To the contrary, the purity of the Church and the integrity of the Gospel point to the fact that I must be uncompromising in holding those who claim to represent Christ to the very standards that Christ has established.
